Two Appearances, Two Wins; Godel Take Home Hackathon Trophy
This weekend saw the return of the Manchester Hackathon, a 24-hour coding competition in the heart of the city. Having previously walked away with a winning trophy, this years Godel Hack team had a reputation to live up to, and they succeeded in being crowned the company with the best development team.
The event was held at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) known for its devotion to the development of technology, science and industry. MOSI focuses specifically on the city’s achievements in these fields making it the perfect venue to hold a competition of this type. Hack Manchester involves teams of up to four members developing an idea, within 24 hours turning that idea into reality, and present a working final product.
This year’s Godel hack team consisted of Alex M, Alex H, Viktar Y & Alex B who all flew in from our Minsk offices in Belarus, raring to go and ready to take on the competition. The team wanted to increase their chances of success and chose two different challenges to hack, those challenges were proposed by LADbible and Rentalcars.com. Each business involved provided hackers with different challenges and it’s then down to the teams to develop an innovative solution.
The LADbible challenge asked participants to use geo-location and social API’s, to ‘come up’ with innovative ways in which they can get people involved in their community and volunteering. Godel created an application which allows users to search for events in their community based on how far away they are, an app that could prove invaluable for those seeking to get involved with local charity and community events.
Rentalcars.com posed a slightly different challenge asking for hackers to develop a fun, personalised approach to the way their users interact with technology. Godel hackers designed and created a mobile racing game which uses real life locations such as racetracks as the backdrop where users are then able to select a car and race against each other.
Commencing at 1pm on Saturday the team worked around the clock developing their ideas for both, LADbible and Rentalcars.com, right through to 1pm on Sunday. Helped along by copious amounts of coffee and pizza the team remained steadfast throughout, and their efforts didn’t come unrewarded.
The awards ceremony, hosted by Bethany Black, was held at MOSI on the Sunday evening. Once teams had recuperated and after the judges had made their decisions over the weekends submissions the ceremony was underway. Godel were shortlisted for their idea, and went on to win The Company Challenge which is awarded to the company which had the best development team of the weekend for their RentalCars Rental Racer application.
Neil Turvin, CEO of Godel Technologies was thrilled by the team’s victory “The Hackathon isn’t an easy challenge, both in terms of technical knowledge but also for the teams stamina to keep on going especially in the early hours of the morning. There were 255 hackers registered, who were all there to showcase their ideas and skills, it really was a great event to be part of. I am so proud that the Godel team were crowned The Company Challenger winners, it was a great birthday present for me!”
