1) Why was Godel’s dedicated mobile division created?

We’ve provided clients with mobile skills for a long time. For example, in 2016 Godel helped YOTI build their digital identity platform, including their mobile applications. Right now, it’s clear that there’s a lot of demand for mobile skills in the UK. So, in late February 2019 we decided that it would be better to consolidate our expertise into a dedicated mobile division.

2) What does your division look like?

Since February we’ve grown a lot more than originally expected – it’s June and we’re at the capacity we expected to reach by the end of this year. This is no accident – like I mentioned earlier there’s a lot of demand.

Our division is made up of both native and cross-platform mobile developers, with skills across Android, iOS platforms. From a technical perspective it’s great to be able to provide skills across different stacks – we can align with the different tech approaches for each client which a business is used to.

3) How does the division help businesses define and implement their mobile strategies?

In the first stages, it’s all about finding the golden middle ground between the idea and ideal solution. Businesses often have an idea for their mobile strategy which they’d like to implement quickly. When there is less certainty on frameworks, tools and technologies to use, we’re able to approach the project from a consultative perspective.

The mobile division is cross-functional to the core. Our people take a business analyst’s mindset into the initial discovery, to understand what is and isn’t possible within what the client business wants to achieve. They’ll achieve this with regular business trips in the first months of the engagement, to gain a true understanding of the business.

Looking proactively to the end goal means it’s necessary to define the best possible technology stack from the outset. Sometimes this means changing the initial plan, but that is why we adopt agile delivery in all our engagements – it means we can adapt quickly where needed.

For example, sometimes we have conducted this type of analysis with businesses who were set on developing a new native mobile application and reached the conclusion that building a progressive web application is more suitable. It’s important to be honest in this regard so that the client can start developing the most efficient solution.

In other cases, we’ll augment our developers into a businesses’ existing in-house teams. As always agile delivery is important here, to make sure we’re working in line with their processes from the outset.

4) What do some of Godel’s recent mobile projects look like?

It’s exciting – we’re working on a wide variety of unique mobile projects for our clients. With comparethemarket.com, the comparison platform, Godel provides developers on many product streams, such as their Travel, Life and Pet insurance comparison platforms. The Godel mobile team communicates all the time with their in-house mobile developers, product owners and UX/UI designers, so that the comparethemarket.com mobile experience is correctly delivered.

We’ve also helped Muddy Boots, a company which provides innovative software for the food supply chain. Working with Godel’s Xamarin developers they have delivered a consolidated mobile strategy, which has helped the company expand into new markets, reduce costs and offer a much wider choice of platforms to their customers.

5) What key piece of advice would you give a business looking to build out a mobile strategy?

For a business getting started, I would strongly recommend they firstly consider whether a native mobile application is necessary, over a cross-platform app or PWA based on all pluses and minuses for a both approaches in a long-term perspective. Time to market is often key, so proper business analysis and pre-emptive scope planning from both technical and wider-business-impact perspectives is important to make a project go smoothly.
